Pygmy Cypress Starters

Pygmy Cypress (Hesperocyparis Pygmaea) or Mendocino Cypress is native to Northern California and has gained wide acclaim as a valuable species for bonsai.  

It is highly variable in growth form, depending on soil conditions; ranging from a stunted tree from 0.2–5 meters in height at maturity to a large tree up to 30–50 meters in height and 1–2.4 m in trunk diameter when growing in good soil. 

Pygmy Cypress is well suited to bonsai due to its responsiveness to pruning and its ability to develop layered branching over time. With consistent trimming and training, Pygmy Cypress develops graceful movement and strong structure.  It is particularly well-loved for forest and rock plantings that emulate the western coast of North America.
