The art of bonsai began in China over 1,000 years ago, and gained popularity as a craft in Japan over the centuries. Bonsai is simply an ornamental tree in a pot, grown and styled to create a miniaturized and sometimes stylized representation of a tree in nature. We grow our trees locally from seed and cuttings; we offer high-quality supplies, fun merchandise, and easy-to-follow advice on bonsai tree care that will help you keep them happy and healthy.

Eric Schrader

Eric Schrader, our award-winning Chief Bonsai Artist, has been growing and training bonsai for more than 25 years. Trained in the Japanese tradition, Eric specializes in developing trees from raw material to refined bonsai, with a focus on compact structure, intricate detail, and long-term health. His work blends classical techniques with a modern, accessible approach that makes bonsai feel both approachable and deeply artistic.

Dory Schrader

Dory Schrader, our co-founder, brings over 20 years of experience in marketing, brand leadership, and community-building. Whether she’s shaping the voice of Bonsaify, supporting students in classes, or building resources that make bonsai fun for beginners, Dory’s goal is to help more people discover the beauty and enjoyment that bonsai can bring into everyday life.

Sustainability is Our Goal

We seek to grow both our products and our business sustainably. All our trees are grown organically. We support programs and initiatives that mitigate climate change. Our plants are grown using organic methods, and we donate 1% of our sales to One Tree Planted in support of reforestation. We partner with a diverse group of artisans and small businesses, working to deliver beautiful products that have a lower impact on the environment.
