European Birch #1041

European Birch (Betula pendula) is a well-liked landscape tree that has been used for bonsai in the United States and Europe for many years. With speckled bark on young branches that matures to bright white bark and eventually develops dark ridges and texture near the base of the trunk, there is a lot to enjoy as these trees age. The delicate branching structure and small leaves make European Birch an attractive candidate for refined deciduous bonsai.

Native to Europe and parts of Asia, European Birch is a cold-climate species that thrives in areas with distinct seasons and winter dormancy. It prefers full sun and consistent moisture during the growing season. As bonsai, these trees should not be allowed to dry out completely, especially during periods of active growth. Protect from extreme heat and provide winter protection only in the coldest climates where roots may freeze solid.
