Dwarf Jade (Portulacaria afra) is one of the best bonsai trees for beginners. Hardy, forgiving, and easy to care for, it can grow indoors with enough light or outdoors in warm conditions. It’s also pet- and child-safe, making it a great choice for families and children learning bonsai. More experienced growers will find plenty to explore, too, since Dwarf Jade grows and responds to bonsai techniques differently from many other popular species. Rough-Bark Dwarf Jade (Portulacaria afra) combines the forgiving nature of Dwarf Jade with bark that develops a more textured, mature appearance.
Native to South Africa, the P. Afra - aka Elephant Bush, or "spekboom" gets its name because it's a favorite food of African Elephants. It's a succulent-type plant similar to jade, but with smaller, bright green shiny leaves which are edible.
