Chinese Elm (Ulmus chinensis) is a semi-deciduous classic in the bonsai world, known for its graceful form, flaky bark, and vigorous growth. This is the standard seedling variety—not the corkbark cultivar—and features alternating, finely serrated leaves that respond well to pruning and shaping.

In warm winter climates, Chinese Elms may hold their foliage year-round, while in colder regions, they’ll naturally shed their leaves. Adaptable, hardy, and visually refined, they make an excellent choice for bonsai artists of all experience levels.
