Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) seedlings are the wild-type green foliage Japanese maple. Because Japanese maple has diverse genetic character the seedlings can be variable in growth habit and other characteristics. Among the classic species for bonsai, these maples are valued for their delicate foliage and beautiful fall color which is typically red. Unlike commercial nursery stock, bonsai starters are not grafted, avoiding unsightly changes in bark character and bulging.

The starter tree you will receive is in a 3.3" nursery container, with a trunk about 1/8-1/4", and from 8-14"" of growth. May have 1-3 strong shoots. The main trunk has been previously gently wired and some light wire marks may be present, but will fade as the tree continues to grow. (wire may or may not be already removed.) In the case of trees that are taller we may trim the top terminal bud and growth for shipping.

Disappointed

Only 2 things that were awesome about the 3 starter maples was the root work they had done and the cool sticker that was in the box! Packing was horrible, leaves were burnt, broken and slimy black…. And I know all of this doesn’t matter when it comes to bonsai because it’s a long term goal for a beautiful tree… but hot damn, these seedlings were super messed up. I’m really disappointed being that this is a bonsai guru and I love and watch the channel on YouTube! But packing side of the business is not good

Japanese Maples are a bit tricky to ship in hot weather so we may discontinue shipping them except in winter and spring due to these problems.
Would you mind sharing photos? (not necessary but would be helpful for discussion with the shippers. )

Ordered two Japanese maple seedlings as well as a few other supplies. Shipment was received quickly and packed very well. Both seedlings look to be in great condition with no damage from shipping. Looking forward to seeing what these become! Will definitely be ordering more, thank you!

Better than expected

The trees arrived early and were in excellent condition, very healthy and well packaged to survive the trip through the mail.

had a particularly brutal chicago this past year. lost a couple of maple starters but the ones i got from bonsaify survived the winter and are doing great.

No complaints. Beautiful healthy maples with interesting movement in trunks. Will be buying more.
