Ficus Microcarpa "Golden Gate" Ficus Bonsai Tree Care
Golden Gate Ficus Bonsai Tree Care
Ficus microcarpa ‘Golden Gate’ (aka 'Tiger Bark')
A durable, fast-growing tropical bonsai that can adapt to indoor life. Forgiving, but responsive. The more consistent you are, the better it gets.
5 Elements a Ficus Bonsai Tree Needs to be Happy and Healthy
1. Light
Give it bright, direct sunlight whenever possible. Think of optimizing both the intensity of the light and the duration. Outdoors during warm weather is better than indoors. Near a south- or west-facing window is likely the best indoor location. It will tolerate lower light, but growth will slow and leaves may enlarge. In very hot and/or dry locations some shade may be needed (think Phoenix, AZ.)
2. Air
Ficus prefer a consistently warm, breezy environment, fresh air is always best. Warm temperatures (65–85°F) and consistent placement go a long way. Outdoor conditions are better for air flow than indoor conditions. Outdoors, protect from cold weather - temperatures below freezing can damage the plant quickly. Below 40F (or 5C) for long periods are not ideal. Indoors, provide a location with air movement, but avoid heater vents. Ficus will thrive in conditions that are much hotter and more humid than most people like. But they will also tolerate normal warm indoor temperatures. If you live in a climate that has cold winter temperatures, grow the tree outside during warm weather and indoors during cold weather.
3. Water
Let the top layer of soil dry slightly between waterings. When you water, water fully — until excess water drains from the bottom. Ficus can absorb a lot of water and are not normally damaged by over-watering - you can err on the side of more water. There's no formula, generally water every 1-3 days depending on moisture in soil.
4. Fertilizer
Use a time-release fertilizer such as Osmocote. Apply every 2–3 months according to the package directions during the growing season. Sprinkle evenly across the soil surface and continue watering as usual. Many other fertilizers will also work, but time-release is the simplest.
5. Care & Growth: Aka Love
This is a tree that responds well to attention. Prune to shape and to encourage branching. Rotate the tree regularly so it grows evenly. Repot every 2–3 years using well-draining bonsai soil.
What to Watch For
Some leaf drop after a move is normal — it’s adjusting. Yellow leaves often point to insufficient light, or not enough fertilizer or air. Sticky leaves can indicate pests and are worth a closer look. Pests themselves occur more frequently when plant growing conditions are not optimal. If you get pests like scale or aphids regularly, consider changing the growing conditions.
A Note
There’s no perfect schedule. Pay attention, adjust, and stay consistent.
