Stewartia monadelpha, aka "Tall Stewartia" is the tree native to Japan that is beloved for reddish smooth bark under the exfoliating outer layer. It is commonly seen as medium to large trees in Japanese exhibits. Stewartia prefer lots of water, bright shaded conditions and higher humidity. (Likely not suitable to dessert or southwestern US climates.) Stewartia have a lovely small spring flower although they are not prolific bloomers. Fall color is typically bright red.
